Consensus

The Byzantine Generals Problem

Why it matters

"Nakamoto consensus" is widely regarded as the first practical, permissionless solution to Byzantine agreement at scale — a genuine computer-science contribution beyond money.

What it is

A classic distributed-systems problem: how can parties reach agreement over an unreliable network when some participants may be faulty or malicious? Satoshi explicitly framed Bitcoin as a solution.
