Why they matter

Bitcoin's blockchain is, structurally, their timestamping scheme made decentralized: a chain of hashes that fixes the order of events in time. Satoshi cited their work three times.

Cryptographers who, in a series of papers beginning with "How to Time-Stamp a Digital Document" (1991), built a system that chains documents together with hashes so none can be back- or forward-dated. Theirs are the most-cited references in the Bitcoin white paper.
